City Manager Q&A: Erin Gurak

After months of hard work, bRUNch is finally launching in Austin! However, this would not have been possible without are amazing city managers, Erin and Brittany who have helped make our vision a reality.  Since you will be seeing these ladies a lot this season we thought we’d do a little Q&A session so you can get to know each one a little better!  Meet Erin.

What is your full-time job?

By day I work in project management for a state education agency. By night I'm a volunteer fundraiser with the Human Rights Campaign and love it!

What inspired you to start running?

My dad ran marathons for a decade and I always thought I had the running bug in me somewhere. I started with a few 5K races in 2011 but didn't get hooked until my first 10K in 2013, out in beautiful Marble Falls, TX. After that I realized, “Hey, I'm totally capable of doing this, and I really like it!” I've kept up with trail runs and several fundraising 5K and 10K runs since!

Why do you love running?

Running is such a versatile exercise. It can energize you in the morning and get you in a positive mindset for the day. It can relax you at night after a long day at the office. It's social - you can run with new and old friends, and share your running milestones together. It's a way to enjoy the outdoors and see your city or explore the country.

And running teaches you so much about persistence, discipline, and perseverance. It's truly an exercise where you can focus on your physical and mental well-beings.

What is your favorite brunch entree?

How can I pick just one?! Breakfast tacos, shrimp & grits, quiche...anything savory!

What is your favorite brunch drink?

A cold beermosa - half pale ale & half OJ, please!

What is your favorite running gear?

Gap Body workout wear, neon sneaks from New Balance, and my iPhone armband to crank up the jams!

What is your favorite distance to run?  

I love a quick 5K lap around Lady Bird Lake in Austin. Whether in the morning or at dusk, it's the perfect distance to slow down my mind and relax.

What are your running goals?

My next goal is a half marathon around the San Antonio Missions in February 2015! The 13.1 miles is intimidating, but I believe in myself and know that I can do it! One day I'd love to run a full - it would be awesome to run the Twin Cities Marathon in my hometown!
